When it comes to items for children, consumers should know the benefits and risks before committing to a purchase. A bunk bed is one item that requires particular conscientiousness.
In addition to a wide array of designs, finishes, and safety features, you may come across some unfamiliar vocabulary that refers to specific parts of the bed. Hopefully, this brief description will clear up any gray area surrounding Bunkie boards, slat kits, and metal grid support systems to help you make an informed decision.
What is a Bunkie Board?
A Bunkie board is simply the foundation for a bunk bed, much like a box spring is to a traditional bed, though the Bunkie is considerably thinner. Both serve the function of providing support.
A Bunkie board is a thin platform that fits inside the bed frame to support the mattress. Otherwise, the mattress can sink in the middle and lose shape and integrity.
Sometimes the Bunkie board is optional instead of included, because some purchasers choose to make their own or use one from a bunk bed that they owned in the past. They vary from the most basic wood panels to Bunkie boards that are padded and upholstered for design and added comfort.
What is a Slat Kit?
Slat kits are a series of wooden or metal slats that attach firmly to the frame with screws. A slat kit eliminates the need for a Bunkie board or box spring, as all three perform the same function.
The idea is to provide adequate support for the mattress. To best accomplish this, the mattress should rest directly on the slats with nothing in between.
If one slat should happen to incur damage or break, it's easier and more economical to replace a single slat than it is to replace an entire Bunkie board.
What is a Metal Grid Support System?
All metal bunk beds are constructed with a metal grid support system. Consisting of a strong metal mesh platform built into the bunk bed frame, metal grid supports provide all the support and security you need for a bunk bed mattress.
When you order a metal bunk bed, you don't need a Bunkie board, slat kit, or box spring because the metal grid is sufficient. And it's even easier to assemble than a slat kit system because no screwing is involved. Simply place your mattress on top of the metal grid and you're all set for safe, comfortable sleeping.
The Bottom Line
As long as something is in place to support the bunk bed mattress, you should be fine. The key is to provide structural integrity, and Bunkie boards, slat kits, and box springs all accomplish this.
